SMU Asst Prof Eugene Tan comments on the upcoming elections noting that bread and butter issues, including rising costs, are
what Singaporeans are concerned about and could become "explosive" issues.

He added that controversial issues such as the flooding of Orchard Road, the escape of Mas Selamat, the corruption case at SLA, accountability of charity organisations could be issues the opposition will take up to point out there needs to be an opposition to check the government. He says what could be used by the opposition in their campaign slate of issues could also be that of the pay of Ministers and senior civil servants.

On the Presidential election due by end of August next year, he notes that the last Malay President was Singapore's first president,
Yusuf lshak who served between 1965 and 1970 and it may be time to have another Malay president
